An Overview: Gujarat Technological University postponing Exams due to COVID-19

The Gujarat Technological University (GTU),  scheduled to begin its exams from 2nd July 2020, and July 13. However, seeing the increase in the number of cases in the state they have postponed the exam. GTU had given the students 3 options. Those were classroom exams, online exams, or special exams after the Covid-19 situation improved. Gujarat University had earlier conducted a poll for the opinion of holding examinations.54,000 students voted to have the examinations and only 900 students opposed.

These exams are likely to be conducted by the end of July or September

The assessment, pending results, markings, and evaluation of all colleges will be done by August 15, said the HRD minister. As per the latest updates, universities are to open after August 15, following the guidelines given by the ministry. 

Many universities have started an online admission procedure. Some colleges have also started online teaching through various virtual teaching platforms.

The ministry of education will not rush for reopening the institutes. As a student’s safety is a priority. However, consultations with various states have already begun. With proper guidelines, the health and hygiene of students will be taken care of. The future is very uncertain, but there is hope for a better tomorrow.

UGC gave guidelines to universities across the country to conduct the final year exam by September end. Looking at the safety parameters we can say that an online exam is the only solution to keep the academics going on.The pandemic has forced people across the world to stay indoors causing the suspension of examinations. To give away the degree to the students it is necessary to conduct online examinations. Vice-chancellors of some universities are finding it tough to hold examinations under the conditions.The only feasible method to conduct exams in circumstances as they are today is through online portals.The biggest challenges organizations faced while conducting online exams are as follows:-Lack of awareness and experience is one of the greatest obstacles in experimenting with online examination management systems.-There is an opinion that students could resort to using unethical means in an online test. They may obtain impersonators who might take the examination on their behalf.-A student may have someone helping him/her from behind the webcam with answers.- They may further make use of smartphones to cheat on their online tests. They may even log in to different web browsers to obtain answers.-There could be many other methods of malpractice that the students might practice such as connecting external storage devices, and even screen sharing.-Both teachers and students are customary to paper-based tests.
